Name: Kingdom: Animals
Definition: Animals are classified in the kingdom with the most complex organisms.
Structure: Among the five kingdoms of living organisms on Planet Earth, animals are the least in number. Animals are subdivided into nine major groups (phyla) to include many types of organisms such as sea corals and sponges, worms, snails and starfish, insects and crabs, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. The last five subdivisions of animals, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals are vertebrates, because they have a spinal column. The other animals are non-vertebrates.

Function: One of the activities of animals that distinguishes them from other kingdoms is that animals move about in their environment. Locomotion means moving about. Skeletal and muscular systems are necessary for this function.
