 Structure:
The hypothalamus of the brainstem,
the hypophysis, the target
glands, their target organs or tissues,
and the circulation are the anatomic
parts of the system. Eight main glands are known: the pineal
and the pituitary (hypophysis) glands in the brain,
the thyroid and the parathyroid
glands in the neck, the adrenal and
pancreas in the back, and the gonads, the
ovaries or the testes
in the pelvis.
Function:
A cascade of hormones initiated by the hypothalamus stimulates the anterior
lobe of the hypophysis, causing it to secrete trophic hormones that
enter the circulation, and are taken up by target glands and tissues able
to respond throughout the body. This system regulates growth
and development, metabolism and energy
production, fluid balance,
and reproduction.
