Name: Femur
Definition: The single, long bone of the thigh.
Structure: Bones have many shapes; they are classified as long, short, flat, or irregular. Locomotion depends mainly on the long bones. In the back leg (lower extremity), the femur, the bodies longest bone, connects the pelvic girdle (pelvis) above in a ball-in-socket joint. Below, the femur meets the tibiofibula in a hinge joint. The femur lies deep to a number of strap muscles, which are attached at strategic sites on the femur to produce optimal leverage for producing movements.

Function: The resting position of the femur is flexion. Rapid extension at the hip pushes the animalÕs pelvis up and forward, and extension of the lower leg at the knee pushes the femur upward during a leap.
