Structure: The hypothalamus is a specialized part of the midbrain that connects with the medulla oblongata in the brainstem, and regulates the anterior pituitary gland, the hypophysis or 'master gland' for the endocrine system.
Function: The hypothalamus regulates the autonomic nervous system, emotions and behavior, body temperature, hunger, thirst, sleep-waking cycles, and the synthesis of releasing hormones for the anterior pituitary gland (hypophysis).
