Structure: Growth hormone is stimulated by exercise, other stresses, estrogen hormones, and low blood sugar. Somatomedin C, high blood sugar or fats, obesity, and depression reduce GH secretion.
Function: Growth hormone affects all body cells, but especially bone and muscle, as an anti-insulin, anabolic hormone. It increases the metabolism of fat, and reduces the use of blood glucose. In the liver and other organs, GH has growth stimulating properties, through the action of Somatomedin C. In the skeletal system, bone and cartilage growth are stimulated. In muscle, protein synthesis and cell proliferation is promoted.
