Structure: Aldosterone is a steroid hormone, a mineralocorticoid, secreted by the glomerulosa zone of the adrenal gland. Secretion of the hormone is stimulated by elevated K+ in blood, low Na+, decreasing blood pressure and blood volume. Aldosterone is regulated by the blood levels of Na+ and K+, as described, and also by the renin-angiotensin system of the kidney. It is stimulated weakly by ACTH from the adenohypophysis, and by the atrial natriuretic factor (ANF) from the heart.

Function: Aldosterone's primary role is signalling the kidney tubules to keep Na+ in the body. It promotes resorption from the intestines, the saliva and the skin, too.
