Structure: Androstenedione, a weak androgenic hormone secreted by the ovarian stroma, and also by the thecal cells surrounding the maturing ovarian follicles.
Function: After puberty, androstenedione is secreted from the ovary as the female's androgen hormone. Androstenedione probably adds stimulus to the development of bones and muscles, and the skin. It serves as the precursor to estrone, a weak estrogen, that is produced in muscle and fat of obese women, in proportion to body weight, or more specifically, to body surface area.
