Structure: Each foot has five metatarsal bones that articulate with the distal tarsal bones above and the phalanges beyond.
Function: These long bones contribute to the leverage of the foot for jumping. They and the phalanges are connected by a soft tissue web that is useful for navigation, as in choosing a landing site, or as a flipper for swimming.
