Definition: The calcaneus and the astragalus bones make up the proximal tarsal bones of the back feet.

Structure: These long bones join at the tibiofibula above, and connect with the distal tarsals of the foot.
Function: The proximal tarsals contribute, as elongated ankle bones, to the leaping ability of the frog. They extend the leverage of the leg muscles as the foot unfurls about the ankle joint, propelling the leg upward in a leap.
