Definition: The distal tarsals, several small bones, and the prehallux are, along with the proximal tarsals, the bones of the ankle.

Structure: The distal tarsals, small round bones, articulate with the long bones above, the proximal tarsals. In the foot, they articulate below with the metatarsals, the long bones of the hind feet. Prehallux are additional small bones that project laterally from the distal tarsal bones.
Function: The distal tarsals provide flexibility within the ankle for jumping.
