Structure: The major components of the brain are the cerebrum and the olfactory cortex (the forebrain), the optic lobes (the midbrain), and the cerebellum and the medulla oblongata (the hindbrain). These basic parts of the mature frog are present during developmental stages of all more advanced classes of animals, in which they become specialized to include more CNS functions. The paraventricular nuclei connect with the hypothalamus, an nerve cells here stimulate the anterior and posterior hypophysis. This component of the brain is called the neuro-endocrine system.
Function: The brain is the coordination and control center for the nervous system. It receives inputs from the senses through the cranial nerves, and from the skin and other organs through the sensory nerves of the peripheral nervous system. The brain controls body movements with the motor cortex and the motor nerves of the peripheral nervous system. Sensing the equilibrium and controlling the orientation of the animal is done by the cerebellum part of the brain. The control of the respiration and heart rate, and many other vital functions of the autonomic nervous system, is located in the medulla oblongata, or brainstem, where the brain is continuous with the spinal cord.
