Function:
The brain is the coordination and control center for the nervous
system. It receives inputs from the senses through the cranial
nerves, and from the skin
and other organs through the sensory
nerves of the peripheral nervous
system. The brain controls body movements with the motor cortex and
the motor nerves of the peripheral
nervous system. Sensing the equilibrium and controlling the orientation
of the animal is done by the cerebellum part of the brain. The control
of the respiration and heart
rate, and many other vital functions of the autonomic
nervous system, is located in the medulla oblongata, or brainstem,
where the brain is continuous with the spinal cord.
