Structure: The cerebellum is a large part of the posterior brain. It connects with the vestibular apparatus, by way of Cranial Nerve VIII (auditory), the sensory nerves of the muscles and tendons, the motor cortex of the cerebrum, and the spinal cord.
Function: The cerebellum functions to maintain equilibrium and stabilize posture. For this, sounds from the vestibular apparatus, and information about the position and pressures felt in muscles and tendons, are referred to the motor cortex of the cerebrum and to the spinal cord to produce voluntary responses.
