Structure: The adrenal medulla is a thin, folded part of the gland. It is made up of chromaffin cells which are modified, post-ganglionic neurons of the sympathetic nervous system. The hormones produced are neural transmitters of the biogenic amines class.
Function: The chromaffin cells secrete epinephrine and norepinephrine into the circulation.
