Structure: The axial skeleton is the distinguishing feature of the vertebrate skeleton. It includes the cranium, or skull, the vertebral column and the rib cage.
Function: The axial skeleton give animals the structure of their body, and makes them stable for movements produced, especially by the appendicular skeleton. The axial skeleton protects the organs contained within.
