Structure: The parasympathetic nerves are the part of the peripheral nervous system that connects both somatic and visceral organs to the central nervous system.
Function: The parasympathetic nerves connect both somatic and visceral organs to the central nervous system. It's primary action is to keep body functions normalized. Heart rate, for example, is slowed by the parasympathetic system, in response to increases produced by exercise, fear, or anxiety. These are produced by the sympathetic nervous system.
